Welcome To Chester County!
With it's excellent location and transportation system, diverse economy along with an outstanding school and health care system, Chester County is a wonderful place to live. The recreational and cultural facilities combine with an idyllic mix of small town, rural and suburban communities to help create a gracious and desirable life sytle.
In 1692 the county was carved out from lands granted to William Penn by King Charles II and settled on by British Quakers and later by German immigrants. Deep and abiding historical roots are very much evident in the form of Revolutionary war sites, quaint one room schools and Quaker meeting houses built in the early 1700's along with the fifteen wooden covered bridges still standing. West Chester (originally called Turks Head) has been the county seat since 1788 and is the home of West Chester University. Yearly cultural events include the West Chester Festival of the Arts, Turks Head Music Festival, Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration and the ever popular Chester County Restaurant Festival. Culturally, Chester County is justifiably proud of it;s Kennett Symphony Orchestra, Longwood Gardens and People's Light and Theatre Company as well as the extensive county and municipal parks system. Chester County is not only winthin easy reach of four major cities - Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore and New York, but residents can be seen skiing in the Pocono Mountains or sunning on New Jersey, Delaware, or Maryland beaches in two hours driving time or less.
